Force FX Lightsabers

Recently Master Replicas released the Darth Maul Force FX Dual-Bladed Lightsaber (as well as the damaged single bladed lightsaber).

Last year as a Halloween prop, I picked up Force FX Anakin Skywalker Lightsaber as part of a Revenge of the Sith promotional sale at Borders for $99 USD -- it's on sale at KB toys for $80 now, along with the Force FX Darth Vader Lightsaber.

I had originally bought all 3 -- red, blue and green lightsaber, but I ended up returning the red and green ones because after playing with the blue one, the red (Darth Vader) and the green (Luke Skywalker) seemed of lesser quality due to the amount of plastic used for the Darth Vader lightsaber (almost all the black bits on the lightsaber is the same type of plastic that I associate with plastic buckles and luggage handles), and the lack of worksmanship in the Luke Skywalker Lightsaber (the handle is metal, but it's a matte finish rather than a chrome one, and the black is painted on). The Darth Maul lightsabers, sadly look to be the same matte metal finish as the Luke Skywalker blades, though I haven't seen it in person yet.

The Mace Windu Lightsaber (which I've tried out) is similar in build quality as the Anakin blade -- mostly chromed metal.

These lightsabers are great -- the "blade" telescopes upward (an improvement from the original model of the Force FX lightsabers which just switched on), and they make the appropriate sound effect for when they are switched on and off, the hum of the blade, and a couple of different blade striking sounds. The Force FX lightsabers are what we all wish we had when we were kids running around with wrapping paper rolls or flashlights and making whooshing sounds.

Star Wars in 3-D

Force.net reports that next year could see the release of a 3-D version of the Phantom Menace in theaters. I don't particularly like 3-D movies -- they've always felt really gimmicky to me, so I can't say I'm looking forward to this. Of course, to me, this whole thing sounds like yet another attempt to milk the Star Wars franchise for more cash. Of course, we all know how much Phantom Menace sucks, so I can't understand why anyone would want to see it again for 10 bucks, years later in 3-D.

Star Wars: The Franchise Menace

I have no problem with Lucasfilm finally releasing the unaltered versions on DVD. In fact, given their stance on re-releases of the original trilogy, I'm really surprised at their decision on such a radical move. And just for the record, every version placed on video for the Star Wars trilogy has been altered in some way from the theatrical cut, and I will predict that the "theatrical editions" will be made from the masters that were used to make the Special Edition cuts of the trilogy. As I see it, this move to produce yet another edition of Star Wars is a last minute attempt to make a grab for the money on DVD before everyone begins to convert their media library to Blu-ray or HD-DVD, and then in another 10 years, we can expect the remasted definitive Blu-Ray/HD-DVD version.

Star Wars Barset

Years ago, I used to be quite the Star Wars fanboy. Of course, those of us who grew up as fanboys are now old enough to drive and create Star Wars themed cars, so why shouldn't Lucasfilm licensing allow a set of Star Wars themed bar utensils?

Darth Vader/corkscrew, Yoda/wine stopper, C-3PO/foil cutter, R2-D2/bottle opener.

I'm not so sure about the Yoda wine stopper though -- he didn't work too well on Luke.

I scored 42.

On the Web 2.0 or Star Wars Quiz. This is likely due to me reading newsfeeds all day long about web development. I started first by first marking all the ones I knew as Star Wars. Then I marked all the ones that I knew were Web 2.0. To be fair, there's expanded universe names scattered within the quiz (the one I missed is likely expanded universe).

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt with a lightsaber

Star Wars: Ryan vs. Dorkman. Created for the Lightsaber Choreography competition, it has some nice lightsaber work. Filmed in Menlo Park.

Jaromir?

New Digital Character in LOTR

I ordered some new parts for my car today, new door sills and taillights. Purely cosmetic modifications. I still want to purchase a GPS, some side skirts, and a condenser grill. Is this the start of a new hobby?

For Luck

Alias: "Hi, My name is Marshall J. Flinkman and I'm here to rescue you." This is of course yet another Star Wars reference. It's a paraphrasing of the words that Luke says to Princess Leia in the detention cell. The camera shots in the scene also mimic those of Luke and Leia swinging across the corridor in Star Wars.

Yeah, I notice these things... it comes from watching Star Wars dozens of times when I was a kid. Sadly, (or should that be fortunately) I cannot quote the entire movie, line by line, like some people I know. Speaking of Star Wars, here's a Star Wars Personality Test.

Alternative Lord of the Rings: What if Lord of the Rings was written by a different famous author, like Rudyard Kipling or James Joyce or Andrew Lloyd Weber?

Across the Chasm

The rain's still pouring down outside.

Alias: I think it's interesting that Sydney shuts everyone out of her life. She says it's an act of love to deceive the people she cares about. Especially given that just about everyone we've ever seen in Syd's life has either been an agent or counteragent. I mean, if you think about it, the only person she's decieving for protection on what she's doing is her roommate Francie. Everyone else works for one side or another and their work makes them targets. Of course, I don't really believe Francie is a totally innocent bystander. In fact, I think she's partly responsible for the kidnapping of Emily. Now, it could be Sark that's behind it, but that's a bit too obvious. Oh, and did anyone else find it odd that Syd is briefing Will in her own living room? We know that Syd's living areas are under surveilance, so she's probably already tipped off SD-6 about Will. I think the bit of Ewokese that Marshall speaks is from the meeting between Leia and Wicket.

A tiny piece of Star Wars trivia: Many of the alien languages spoken in Star Wars are either real languages spoken in the world or composited from various languages. Ewok, for instance is a layering of Tibetan, Mongolian and Nepali languages.
