Hate: PSP

My hatred for the PSP knows no bounds.

But for those of you who don't think I'm being fair, here is a list of the reasons why I originally thought the PSP would be awesome (followed by the reality of the situation).

  • Wireless

Sounds great, until you realize that this is dependent on two features -- open WiFi networks and another PSP in range.
  • Amazing color screen

The cost of color screens is always power draw and battery life. The PSP's battery lasts between 3 and 6 hours. You can plug it in and play, but at that point, you're stationary and you might as well be playing on a real console.
  • Plays MP3s

Unfortunately, from what I've heard, the Sony MP3 playback feature is abysmal. Not in terms of sound quality, but rather user interface.
  • Movie playback

Sounds great, but we have no idea what the movies will cost executives were smoking when they priced movie UMDs at $20-$30. That's as much as a DVD of the same title! Plus being that these movies will be proprietary-Sony formatted, they won't play in your DVD player or even your PS2.
  • Third Party Support

Third party support is great, it is what makes or break a console system (see: Atari Lynx. I think after the initial push, some developers will likely jump ship if they smell losses.
  • Under $200?

While the price in Japan for a basic system is about $190 US, the price in the US will be $250, due to their bundling of the system with Spider-Man 2 and some additional accessories.
  • Sony Branding

In addition to all this, you have to realize that you're dealing with the mega-corp Sony, and so you have brand encouragement. For instance, the PSP will have a Memory Sticks (instead of CompactFlash Memory). Memory Sticks are expensive, and unless you have a VAIO or a Sony camera, you're not likely to own one.
  • Cost of Games

Ouch. When the original PS One came out, because they were put onto CDs rather than cartridges, were available for $30 to $40. Cartridges at that time were in the price range of $60 - $80, and Sony was able to use that price advantage to help sell their PlayStation. Right now current pricing of games will be in the $40 - $50 price range. Pretty comparable in price these days to a PS2 game, which again brings up the question of why someone would want to play a PSP game vs. a console game.
  • Square Button

Apparently, due to the design of the PSP, the square button has an inherent flaw that it doesn't always read the input.

I think when you add it all up, the PSP is a gigantic incoming flop.

YOU ARE RIGHT. I HATE THE PSP IT IS RUBBISH. DISKS???? IN A HANDHELD????????? GET REAL SONY. THE NINTENDO DS IS GONNA CRUSH YOU.

LOLZ GUYZ PSP TOTALY SUX RITE?????? WTF LETZ JUS ST!CK WIT A NINTENDNO MONOPOLY RITE GUYZ!?!?!??

I for one welcome our new sony overlords, they have pizzazz. This isn't just another shitty handheld, its a complete overhaul of portable gaming, with any luck it will kick nintendo out of their half-arsed domination of the market and encourage them to cram decent stuff into their systems rather than taking the nintendo 64 and sticking a touch screen on it.

Wow, I can't beleive you. The ds isn't just the n64 with a touch screen. You can do things with a handheld that could never be done before, including rts's. By the way, we're supposed to be talknin about the psp anyway. In my opinion, don't buy it. It may seem great at first, heck, at one point even I wanted to buy one, but in the longrun you'll be dissapointed with the price of the games and movies. If they lower the price of the system and the games, maybe, but not now at least.

I think the ds will crush the psp.And I also think that sony is just a big copycat.

People:

PSP sucks, that is true, but everything has to have SOME flaws. The DS has some flaws too, Even though the PSP has more.

I totally agree with you mike, but you forgot to add one thing:

If sony comes out with a gaming device, people say, "oooh!!!!! the system is made by sony! MUST...BUY...SYSTEM!!!!!" because the sony brand name is slapped on to It, and people just ate up the playstation console when it came out, They automatically expect that the system will be extremely good and popular.they totally overlook any flaws it might have, start bitching about how the other systems aren't worth a rat's ass, and buy it right away. but have any other brand make a game, and the consumers say, "We have to look at this. is it good? what are its features? I bet it sucks because no one can make something better than sony." they then start looking for every single miniscule flaw in that system, or for that fact, ANY consumer electronics product and post them on numerous random websites saying, "OMFG OMFG this system sucks man it sucks like hell if you want a good system go buy a Sony system!!!!!!! WOOT go sony!!!!!" if we slapped the sony label on a piece of poo it would sell like hotcakes. you see, consumers today dont care about the product, they care about what company makes it. which is why so many deserving things out there don't sell squat. so next time you're at the store, actually look for quality, see if you like it, and don't give a shit about the brand name.

yes psp sucks. it will die like the sega gamegear. pwahahahha!!

DS outsold PSP by 800000 units in Japan! That should mean something! =D

PSP is a piece of junk!If you buy any movies for it they won't play in anything else but the PSP! Who would buy this junk? $250? What a joke! Go buy a DS, your getting what you pain for!

$300 bucks for a game and a system thats a rip a total waste of money! only a rich kid would buy a psp. but we cant even call it portable it should just be another consle.

I hate the PSP too, on the Ds you can stab stuff using the touch screen which to me is better than another driving game that you can get on a console.

DS= Dominant system
PSP= Pot smoking poophead

One of my friends owns a DS and is thinking about getting a psp...yes he is a rich bastard>>I have to show him this site to show him truth about this handheld that gets only 3 hours and if u went on a vacation u would have to buy like 5 45$ batteries.

PSP is a total waste of money. I tell all my friends who got it its a waste of money. Why can't you just tape an ipod to a DS?!?! I would never pay more than $200 on a console. Why can't Sony and Nintendo just get along? :-(

Amazing color screen - PSP gets 5 to 6 hours and takes about an hour to charge.

Plays MP3s - Its easy to use and has great quality.

Movie playback - Movies cost only 15 to 20 dollars.

Sony Branding - The PSP comes with everything you need to get started for 250 $$$

Cost of Game - True the games are 40 to 50 dollars but so are the games for PS2, Xbox and GC.

Square Button - WTF? If you get a defected square button you can send it in to sony and they'll fix it and pay the shipping.

I know you'll just read this and say its a bunch of lies, but this comes from a man that actually has a PSP. As for the wireless I still have to give it a try.

PSP is awesome, you can deny it but it'll be like denying your own existence.

I'm against spending so much on a handheld just because I honestly don't think the same concentration goes into developing games for handheld systems vs. console systems. I'm not denying that the Game Boy and its descendants have not had some pretty excellent games, but I think if you compare the overall average quality of console games to the overall average quality of portable games, console will come out on top.

I will not be buying a PSP, but I might just buy a DS because I want to play my GBA games on a lighted screen :-D.

i have psp and ds and my psp is way better better graphics better capabilities the ds was a waste of my money

yeah, your right! I bought a DS so I could play my GBA games too, but..that's not the only reason I bought it. I bought it for the games and all of the amazing features. Why would anyone buy a PSP? It's too exspensive and the games are more than what I pay for my PS2 games. I played NFL street on my friend's PSP and it was the same as the PS2 version.I guess that is how all the games are going to be.At least DS games are innovated!!

I Hate Sony and i will never buy a sony product. The DS is alot cooler and i dont care what anyone says. I am only a nintendo supporter

Sony could not think of anything else to make so they copied Nintendo and made a Portable game system.

The PSP is a piece of garbage. I used to have one, and I'm glad I decided to return it.

who would buy a psp? The games are the same price as a ps2 or xbox game, I mean who would pay $50 for a game for a handheld? Everytime when a show or a website reviews a psp they never mention anything about price. So I'm going to mention price! Guess what? Did you know that one memory stick for a psp is $60, and did you know the cheapest psp game is $40, and the cheapest DS game is $20? Why do people even compare the DS with the psp? The psp itself cost more than the ds (way more) and a psp game cost more than a ds game! It's like comparing a motorized scooter to a normal scooter! I own a ds and I love it and I think it's cool, and I don't care what knowbody thinks!!

Thank You

A kid in my school got seizures from playing a PSP...

I was looking in a store ad that was having a big sale on games and I saw Midnight Club 3 for the PS2 and for the PSP. For the PS2 it was $29.99....... and for the PSP it was $39.99, that's ridiculous.

Despite what you say about how PSP sucks and all that, Sony has made a huge leap in portable gaming. Nintendo will have to follow or fail.

Nintendo doesn't have to follow the PSP at all. Nintendo has been making handhelds for years and this is Sony's first handheld. Yes, Sony has made a huge leap in portable gaming with the PSP, it is an amazing system, but everything about it is expensive. The DS is $150 and the PSP is $250, you get what you pay for, so how can you say Nintendo will have to follow or fail when the PSP cost $100 more. I don't think the DS will fail at all because they are coming out with some innovated games, I have a DS and I can see the innovation in the games. I will not be buying a PSP because the games are the same price as my PS2 games. I'm totally against paying $50 dollars for a handheld game. I also have an Ipod and a portable DVD player, so if I was to have a PSP the music feature and the movie feature would be wasted. So why should I buy a PSP? Somebody please tell me why.

i find it a bit galling that the second post from the top calls nintendo a "monopoly". if anything, it's sony who are monopolising the ENTIRE GAMING WORLD with fancy graphics and gameplay. nintendo sadly now struggle on, giving oddball games a chance (lost in blue, mario, phoenix wright) whilst playstation hand out the same FPS's and RPG's as always. only with each passing year, the graphics get a tiny bit better. woop-de-doo.

u guys have no clue

I'm using a PSP to write this. Cool, huh?

As far as I know, of the original problems I listed regarding the PSP, the only problem that has been fixed is the square button, which Sony admitted was defective in the design (after telling everyone it was intentional)

The PSP is a cool gadget, and the screen is beautiful, however, as a game system, I still find the actual game software quite lacking -- that's not to say that people haven't made homebrew modifications to enable the PSP to do some amazing things, but these things are obviously not things that Sony wants done (and they've taken steps to break some of the things other people have broken).

STUPID SONY. NINTENDO WILL STAMP YOU INTO THE EARTH LIKE THE SLIMY YELLOW SLUG THAT YOU ARE.

I want to know somthing. Why does everyone say the PSP is $250? Its only $200! The $250 comes with headphones, a memory stick and a cleaning cloth.

Because the PSP is $250. I haven't seen it for anything less than $229 (but admitedly I'm not looking very hard).

Has anyone heard of Emulators.. You can play NES, SNES, Genesis, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, Mame, soon PSone, ALL ON YOUR PSP. Now I'm not sure if DS can do this, but hell, why would anyone spend a dime on those "Oh so expensive" games when you can just get an emulator, some roms and have a day of good old 2d action.

Nintendo has a policy against emulating their games/systems. If you emulate games on your PSP, you will get arrested.

John is right. You can get arrested for running nintendo emmulaters on your psp. If you don't believe us just keep getting those emmulaters, then you will find yourself in jail! I don't like the psp anyway because it cost too much and it is more than what I payed for my PS2, and I wouldn't want to play most of the games for the psp on the road, I would rather play them on my PS2 (even though the ps2 is not a portable). I've played both DS and PSP and the DS games were more fun to play in my opinion.
